The Yosemite Museum, located in the heart of Yosemite Village, is an excellent place to learn about the history and culture of this stunning region. It contains a wide variety of artifacts, exhibits, and displays that illustrate the beauty and richness of this unique part of the world. Visitors can explore Yosemite's natural history, geology, people and cultures, ecology, art and photography as well as its many other features. They can also visit demonstrations on basket weaving or hear traditional American Indian stories told by local elders. The museum offers something for everyone – from the casual observer to the serious scholar.
The main exhibit at the museum is the Collection of Yosemite Indian Artifacts which consists of objects dating back more than 8500 years. These items range from arrowheads and pottery pieces to tools and clothing used by native tribes in their daily lives. There are also exhibits on Native Americans’ religious beliefs, customs, language and way of life. An interactive learning center provides hands-on activities such as making fire with stones or building a shelter out of natural materials found in the Valley.
Other highlights include displays on early settlers in Yosemite Valley, John Muir’s influence upon conservation efforts, incredible photographs by Ansel Adams as well as models that demonstrate how glaciers formed many landforms in Yosemite National Park today. The museum also hosts various educational programs such as lectures or slide shows that provide insight into different aspects of Yosemite's rich cultural heritage. The gift shop sells books about park history and nature as well as souvenirs to take home with you.
The museum is open year round but hours vary depending on seasonality so it is important to check ahead before visiting. Admission is free but donations are accepted to help support its ongoing operations and programming initiatives!
