The Norwegian Lady statue is an iconic representation of Virginia Beach’s maritime history. The statue was erected in memory of the crew of a Norwegian bark ship that foundered off the shore of Virginia Beach in 1891. The bronze figure stands at a height of eight feet and weighs six thousand pounds. It is often regarded as one of the most beloved sculptures in the city, providing a wonderful window into its past.
The story behind this famous work of art is steeped in tragedy and heroism. On Christmas Eve, 1891, the captain and crew aboard the ship “Dictator” encountered rough seas not far from Virginia Beach. After several hours fighting against Mother Nature’s aggressive onslaught, Captain Albert Andersen beached his vessel on an island sandbar near present-day Sandbridge. As they ran aground, ten brave crew members sacrificed their own lives to save the remaining twenty-five passengers on board by pushing them away from danger with their bare hands.
In honor of those who were lost at sea, local residents raised funds to build a monument that would stand permanently overlooking the ocean - The Norwegian Lady Statue. It was originally installed in 1931 and has since been moved to two other locations before being placed at its current home near 24th street along Atlantic Avenue in 1991 for its centennial anniversary celebration. This location allows visitors from all over to appreciate its beauty as well as remember those who made such a courageous sacrifice for others.
Today, thousands of tourists visit this legendary sculpture each year to pay tribute to Captain Andersen and his brave crew members who paid the ultimate price while protecting their passengers so many years ago. Every time someone passes by the Norwegian Lady Statue they are reminded of just how far people can go when it comes to selfless bravery and heroic deeds despite treacherous odds.
