The iconic Neptune statue in Virginia Beach is a beloved symbol for the city and its residents. The idea for the Neptune statue was first proposed in 1920 by Charles Brossman, who wanted to create "something beautiful that will give pleasure to people." Construction began on July 21st, 1931 and it took over a year before it was finally dedicated at a local ceremony on October 11th 1932. Since then it has become an integral part of Virginia Beach's cultural identity and has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors flock to have their photo taken alongside Neptune or simply to admire his grandeur up close.
At night time, spotlights illuminate him from below which further accentuates his strong features. This striking sight can be seen from miles away, reminding everyone that they are within reach of this beautiful shoreline.
