The Cape Henry Lighthouse in Virginia Beach is a historic structure that has been standing since 1792. It was the first lighthouse to be commissioned by the United States government and the first public works project of its kind. The light was built to aid navigation for ships entering and leaving the Chesapeake Bay and is located on the site of an earlier lighthouse built by English colonists in 1791. The current tower stands at 175 feet tall and is made of cast iron with a brick lining. Its light can be seen for about 20 miles out at sea.
The original tower stood only 80 feet tall and had just one beacon which shone forth every few seconds, warning sailors of nearby landmasses. In 1881, it was replaced with a taller lighthouse constructed from cast iron plates, This new structure sported three lights: two red lenses set just below its main white lens, making it easier for mariners to identify their positions in relation to each other vessels on the water. The new tower was also equipped with a fog signal that could be heard up to 15 miles away during heavy fog or inclement weather conditions.
In addition to its practical use, Cape Henry Lighthouse also served as a landmark symbolizing America’s independence and strength as a nation; it was even featured on coins issued by Virginia Beach before the American Revolution! Today, visitors can explore this historic site via guided tours offered daily from April through October; from November through March, it is open only on weekends and holidays. Visitors can learn more about the history of this important structure, including interesting facts about its construction; see spectacular views of the beach from atop its observation platform; take pictures against beautiful backdrops; or simply enjoy some peaceful moments with friends and family while admiring this iconic beacon of hope that has been guiding sailors home since 1792.
