The Tybee Island Lighthouse, located on Tybee Island in Georgia, has been a beacon of light for hundreds of years. Built by General James Oglethorpe in 1732, it is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in the state of Georgia. For more than two centuries, it served as a guide for ships navigating through the treacherous waters off the coast of Savannah. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich maritime history of the area and continues to be an iconic landmark on Tybee Island.
Standing over 90 feet tall, this historic structure is made up of three layers – a base layer built with tabby concrete and brick construction and two upper levels composed of brickwork with cast iron columns and timber beams. At the top sits the original Fresnel lens which was designed by Augustin-Jean Fresnel and first lit in 1867. This lens magnified and dispersed light efficiently across greater distances than ever before, making visible from nearly 30 miles away at sea! After being decommissioned in 1933, extensive restoration efforts were undertaken to bring it back to its former glory.
Today, visitors can climb up its 178 steps for breathtaking views from atop the tower or take a guided tour offered by Friends of Tybee Island Lighthouse for further insight into its fascinating history. One thing is certain: no matter what way you experience it, one visit to this remarkable piece of architecture will provide your memory with something to last forever.
