Fort Screven, located in Tybee Island of Georgia, is a historic military fort from the 19th and 20th centuries. Constructed between 1898 and 1900 to protect Savannah from naval attack, the fort was manned by U.S. Coast Artillery Corps until its decommissioning in 1947. It was named after General James Mercer Screven who served as an officer in the American Revolutionary War, as well as governor of Georgia for two terms. Visitors to Fort Screven can explore the historic site today and view what remains of the former battleship protection installation - many gun emplacements are still standing along with several other buildings. Of note is Battery Garland , built on ghostly foundations which housed four eight-inch guns that could fire up to 7.5 miles, and Battery Torbert which contained twelve twelve-inch mortars capable of lobbing shells up to 11 miles away! Other features at Fort Screven include two magazines - one for powder storage and another for shell storage; a guardhouse; a power generating plant; a sewerage treatment plant; and numerous barracks among other remnants. In addition to this history lesson in armament technology, visitors can also admire the lovely views over Tybee Island offered by Fort Screven's prime location on top of a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The site has been designated as a National Historic Landmark since 1973 and remains one of Georgia's must-see historical attractions.
