Battery Garland is located on the island of Tybee, Georgia. It was built in 1895 as part of a coastal defense system for the city of Savannah. The battery consists of two 12-inch disappearing guns and two 5-inch rapid fire guns situated on an elevated concrete structure. The walls of the fort were made from brick and reinforced with concrete, and it is enclosed by a dry ditch. The fort was manned by personnel from the US Army Coast Artillery Corp during World War I and II.
The Battery underwent renovation to its interior structures in 2007, making it suitable for public use while preserving its historic integrity. In 2014, the grounds opened to visitors via guided tours run throughout the year. Today, visitors can explore various war memorabilia while learning about Tybee’s military past at Battery Garland. It also hosts several annual events including fireworks displays on July 4th and Memorial Day celebrations.
This unique site is also home to wildlife such as osprey, bald eagles, egrets and painted buntings which often gather around its perimeter. There are also many species of plants growing within its confines such as prickly pears, live oaks and palmettoes that provide refuge for these animals. It's an ideal destination for birdwatchers or those who simply want to appreciate nature at its finest while paying homage to our nation's military history at Battery Garland in Tybee Island .
