The path begins at the Bear Creek Overlook on State Highway 145 and traverses through a variety of ecosystems as it winds its way to the artistically arranged rocks near the top of Prospect Mountain. The Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail rewards those who brave its steep switchbacks with some remarkable vistas. As you ascend up to 9,400 feet above sea level, you'll be able to take in sweeping views of peaks such as Wilson Peak and Lizard Head Peak as well as valleys full of wildflowers and wildlife. For hikers looking for an even greater challenge, there are several alternative routes leading off from the main path that provide access to high mountain passes and other remote areas within Uncompahgre National Forest.

Beginning at roughly 7,600 feet above sea level and gaining about 1,800 feet in elevation over 8 miles—it’s no wonder why some refer to it as “the longest mile”! However, though physically demanding, this path is a worthy endeavor due to its expansive views of nearby mountains including Mt Sneffels (14K ft), Potosi Peak (13K ft), Eolus (14K ft) ,Sunshine Mountain (12K ft)and Windom Peak (14K ft).
