Alta, Colorado was once a bustling mining town in the 1880s located in Telluride. It was known for its gold and silver deposits, drawing miners from across the globe to the area. Though it has been abandoned for over a century, it remains an important reminder of that era of Colorado’s history.
The town was founded by miners during the 1860s who were in search of gold and silver ore. Alta quickly became known as one of the richest gold-bearing regions on earth, producing millions of dollars’ worth of ore throughout its history. The town was built around mines like Bismark and Tower Hill, which boasted some of the most profitable veins in all of Colorado. During its peak in 1883, Alta had over 1,000 residents and numerous businesses such as stores, saloons, hotels and blacksmiths.
Mining operations were slowed by decreased ore deposits and labor strikes at the turn of the 20th century before finally coming to an end in 1910. As mining waned so did business activity within Alta’s boundaries; by 1920 only about 350 people remained living there before it eventually become a ghost town.
Today only ruins remain from this once prosperous mining town. Over time nature has reclaimed much of what used to be Alta; visitors might find crumbling walls or foundations from buildings long gone as well as an old cemetery with many unmarked graves. Despite its current desolate state, Alta is still visited by tourists who are fascinated by this window into Colorado’s past life as a mining hotspot.
