The Sulphur Springs Water Tower in Tampa is an iconic landmark that has been standing since 1926. It stands atop a hill, making it visible from many points around the city and providing a unique skyline for the area. The tower stands 80-feet tall, and is constructed of steel riveted plates on a steel frame, making it quite unique. It was originally built to store water for the Sulphur Springs neighborhood of Tampa, but it now serves as a symbol of the city’s past.
The tower was purchased by the City of Tampa in 1941, when they bought out the Sulphur Springs Hotel and other associated investments. It was then used as part of a treatment plant that supplied much of Tampa's drinking water until 1976 when the facility was closed down and replaced with other technologies. The tower itself was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and is now considered an important part of Tampa’s heritage and culture.
The tower is most commonly painted white and blue, which makes it quite recognizable even from afar. There are two staircases winding around its interior and two observation decks located at different heights, one being near its base while the other being near its top. A ladder leads up to a hole in the roof where visitors can view a 360 degree view of downtown Tampa from above. On clear days you can even catch glimpses of downtown St Petersburg across the bay!
The grounds surrounding the Tower are also quite lovely; surrounded by lush landscapes featuring palm trees, ornamental shrubs and flowers, as well as ponds filled with colorful koi fish. There’s plenty to take in here - from its historical significance to its breathtaking views - so it’s no wonder why people visit this spot year after year! Aside from its beauty, however, there continue to be efforts put forth to preserve this piece of history for future generations to come--both locally through fundraising efforts as well as nationally through historic preservation grants provided by organizations such as Save Our History/Preservation Florida Incorporated (SOF).
All-in-all, The Sulphur Springs Water Tower remains an iconic landmark in Tampa that has long been appreciated by locals both young and old alike – offering breathtaking views unparalleled by any other place within city limits plus giving us all an opportunity to learn more about our ever-changing cityscape!
