Mile High Swinging Bridge, Sugar Mountain, NC
Located in the beautiful Sugar Mountain Ski Resort in North Carolina, the Mile High Swinging Bridge is an iconic attraction that offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. At an impressive elevation of 5,280 feet, it is one of the highest suspension bridges east of the Mississippi River and has become a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. The bridge itself spans a span of 80 feet over an impressive gorge and offers visitors an experience like no other.
The bridge was designed by Eustace Gregg, who also designed many of the other attractions at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, including the ski lifts and gondolas. The design allows visitors to get close enough to feel the mountain air as they walk across it without fear of falling. It features one-inch thick steel cables that are attached to two towers on either side and suspended by tensioning rods. This allows for a total weight capacity of up to 10 people at once and ensures that there is no swaying or movement when people are crossing it.
The Mile High Swinging Bridge is open year-round for visitors to enjoy and explore, but it does have hours of operation during different seasons due to necessary maintenance. During summer months, it can be enjoyed from 9 am -5 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday and 10am -6 pm Eastern time on weekends and holidays; while in winter months its hours range from 10am - 4pm Eastern Time Monday through Friday and 11 am - 5 pm Eastern Time on weekends and holidays. In addition, if conditions such as heavy winds or snowfall prevent safe use of the bridge, then access may be limited accordingly.
