Grandfather Mountain Entrance Gate in Sugar Mountain is an iconic landmark of the North Carolina High Country. This majestic gate stands at the entrance to Grandfather Mountain State Park, a 4,000-acre preserve located within the Blue Ridge Mountains. The gate itself is constructed from large stones that were quarried from nearby mountains and then hand-hewn into blocks. It was built in 1930 to celebrate the centennial of Grandfather Mountain and has been a beloved sight for visitors ever since.
The entrance gate consists of two tall stone pillars with a connecting arch between them. There are several sculptures carved into the stone including a Native American chief and a bison head. Above the arch, there is a metal sign which reads “Welcome To Grandfather Mountain” and can be seen from miles away. Behind the entrance gate lies a long winding road that takes you through dense forests, over bubbling creeks, and up to breathtaking views of the mountain range beyond.
Grandfather Mountain offers many outdoor activities including hiking trails, camping sites, fishing spots, picnicking areas, rock climbing routes, ski slopes, and more. Wildlife such as black bears, deer, bobcats, wild turkeys and other animals can also be seen in this area making it a great place for wildlife watching as well.
One of the most popular attractions at Grandfather Mountain is its Mile High Swinging Bridge which spans eighty feet across an abyss five hundred feet deep! Hikers who make it across will enjoy spectacular views of graceful cascades below as well as soaring peaks above. That bridge has become an iconic symbol for all who visit Grandfather Mountain and now stands as one of North Carolina's most beloved landmarks!
