The arena is named after Carl Howelsen, the Norwegian-born father of skiing in Steamboat Springs. In 1913, Howelsen built the first ski jump on Mount Werner, which has become an iconic symbol of Steamboat Springs. Today, Howelsen Ice Arena provides visitors with a full range of activities including public skating sessions, hockey leagues, figure skating classes and clinics, birthday parties and summer camps.
In addition to providing visitors with an enjoyable place to skate, Howelsen Ice Arena also serves as home base for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC).
