The origins of the Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum can be traced back to its founding in 1955. At that time it was known as The St. Petersburg Branch of the Florida State Museum. Its collections would later become one of five components making up the Florida Botanical Garden as it is known today. Through donations from local palm enthusiast Gizella Kopsick, the arboretum soon grew into a thriving collection of some of the most exotic palms in the state. Situated on seven acres with nearly 1,000 different species including coconut palms, royal palms and king sago palms among others; the Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum is one of the largest collections of its kind in Florida.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities while at the Arboretum such as self-guided tours along winding pathways or a guided tour conducted by knowledgeable staff members who can provide information about all aspects related to palms and their care. There are also educational programs designed for both children and adults where visitors can learn about palm cultivation or discover more about Florida’s native plants while participating in hands-on activities such as planting or harvesting their own palm trees!
