Fort Mose was established in 1738 by the Spanish government as a free black community. It was the first such community in North America, and served as a model for future communities. The residents of Fort Mose were given land, homes, and the freedom to practice their religion and culture. They also had the right to vote, own property, and serve in the military.
The community thrived for many years, but ultimately disbanded in the early 19th century. However, the legacy of Fort Mose continues to this day. The site is now a state park, and is considered an important part of African American history.
