Siesta Key Drum Circle is a unique and exciting bi-weekly event that takes place on the beach of Siesta Key, Florida. The event features many different drums, ranging from traditional African and Latin instruments to modern electronic ones. The sound of these drums can be heard echoing throughout the area and has become an integral part of the local culture.
The history of Siesta Key Drum Circle dates back to the late 1960s when local musician Harry Block began organizing gatherings on the beach for like-minded individuals who shared a passion for drumming. These informal events quickly grew in popularity and soon became a regular occurrence at Siesta Key’s Crescent Beach. As time passed, the drum circle evolved into a larger event with more diversity in its participants as well as its instrumentation. Nowadays, what began as small gatherings at Crescent Beach has grown into an international phenomenon with hundreds attending each week from all over the world.
At Siesta Key Drum Circle, everyone is welcome to come together to create music regardless of age or experience level. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming; attendees are encouraged to be creative and make their own unique sounds while others provide accompaniment or take turns leading songs. Many people bring their own drums or other percussion instruments while some choose to use what is provided by the organizers such as djembes, bongos, congas, shakers, tambourines, cymbals, maracas and more!
In addition to being a great place for community members to get together and make music, Siesta Key Drum Circle also serves as an educational opportunity for those interested in learning more about African and Latin drums or just those looking for a new way to have fun with friends and family. During each session there are usually one or two professional musicians present who will give lessons on different rhythms and techniques related to drumming. It's a great way for people to broaden their knowledge about this ancient art form while also getting some exercise!
