Established in 1883 as an oyster bed business, the property was later sold to Bertha Palmer in 1895 who transformed it into a winter estate. Today, the gardens feature an array of natural habitats from mangrove estuaries to freshwater wetlands.
The site boasts both historically significant buildings such as Palmer’s original house and the chapel she built in honor of her daughter's death as well as a plethora of rare flora species. The grounds showcase over 3,000 different varieties of rare orchids, bromeliads, epiphytes, ferns and tropical trees. Visitors can also explore more than 300 varieties of palm trees ranging from needle leafed specimens like dwarf palmetto to sabal palms which are native to southern Florida.
In addition to its natural beauty and diverse plant life, Historic Spanish Point is also home to archaeological sites which offer insight into Native American cultures.
