The Chapel of the Holy Cross is an iconic sightseeing location in Sedona , Arizona. It is a breathtakingly beautiful, modern chapel that was built in 1956 by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who wanted to create a tangible way to communicate her faith and admiration for her religion. The chapel is situated on the side of a canyon surrounded by towering red rocks, majestic cactus and vibrant greenery. This monumental structure seems to emerge out of the very stone surrounding it.
It's impossible to ignore the structural beauty of this site, as it boasts some stunning architecture, with its angular walls and floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the nearby mountain range. Inside you can admire intricate details such as paintings of Jesus Christ from various artists along with ornate stained glass windows that depict Sacred Scripture stories and hymns set into lyrical patterns. You will also find a large central altar and two side altars dedicated to Mary and Joseph respectively.
One of the most distinctive features about this chapel is its roofline; its two steep peaks are inspired by traditional Catholic churches, while simultaneously echoing the lines of Sedona’s famous red rock formations. Staude chose these specific peaks because they resemble a cross when viewed from a certain angle – making them an homage to Christianity at its core.
Visitors flock here year-round to soak up the spiritual atmosphere as well as explore what lies behind those massive stone walls: chapels dedicated to other faiths such as Buddhists, Native Americans, Hindus and more have been added over time in order to cater for all kinds of worshipers who come here seeking solace or inspiration. Every day is filled with thousands of visitors all arriving for different reasons but sharing one common emotion: awe at how powerful nature can be when combined with faith-filled devotion.
