According to local lore, the tradition began in the early 1990s when some theatergoers stuck their chewing gum to the wall while waiting in line for tickets. Over time, more and more people started adding their own pieces of gum and before long, what was once an ordinary wall had turned into something spectacular.
Today, The Gum Wall is one of Seattle's most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors from all over the world. Standing at 15 feet tall and 50 feet wide, it's estimated that there are over 1 million pieces of chewing gum covering its surface! Although it may not look like much at first glance, upon closer inspection you'll discover that the wall is covered with various shapes and symbols created by different colored pieces of gum. From hearts to flowers to intricate images and words, every piece tells its own story.
As fascinating as The Gum Wall may be, it also comes with its fair share of controversy. Due to health concerns surrounding saliva-covered gum on public surfaces, officials have tried several times to remove it without success.
