Smith Tower in Seattle is a historic landmark that has stood in the city since 1914. It was the first skyscraper built outside of New York City, and the tallest building west of the Mississippi River when it was constructed. It was designed by architect Gaggin & Gillingham and is considered a landmark of early 20th century architecture. The building stands at 42 stories tall and 429 feet high, with an observation deck on the 35th floor offering breathtaking 360 degree views of Seattle, Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier and other surrounding areas.
The building is also home to some unique artifacts like the "Great Fire Bell" which used to be rung from Smith Tower to alert firefighters before the days of modern communication technology. The bell remains in Smith Tower today, along with a full-sized replica of King Kong (created for the 1933 movie) situated atop the entrance archway.
The observation deck itself offers visitors an interactive experience where they can learn about Seattle's history through displays such as historical maps and photographs. On clear days, visitors can see as far as Mount Baker in Washington State and Mount Olympus in Olympic National Park—a distance of more than 120 miles!
Smith Tower is also historically significant due to its role as Washington State's only remaining structure from its original pre-skyscraper esthetic age. As such, it has become a symbol of pride among locals who have watched this building outlast buildings constructed much later than itself during Seattle's golden age of development.
In 2008, Smith Tower opened its doors to visitors once again after years of closure due to renovations; refurbishing its elegant marble lobby, restoring its vintage Otis elevators and completeing seismic retrofitting for safety compliant with current laws; all while preserving its original look from 1914 when it opened. As such, Smith Tower continues to stand strong today as a beloved piece of Seattle's history that stands tall among the modern skyscrapers downtown—lending undeniable character and charm to the city skyline!
