Savannah Historic District, Savannah, GA

The Savannah Historic District in Savannah, Georgia is a National Historic Landmark District that encompasses the original city of Savannah, designated in 1966. The district covers 2.5 square miles and comprises of many architecturally significant buildings, squares and monuments. It includes twenty-four historic squares, many churches (both old and new), Victorian mansions and numerous other structures that reflect Savannah's history as one of the oldest cities in the United States.

The district includes some of the most iconic architectural structures in all of the United States, such as the Mercer House, owned by 19th century cotton broker Hugh Mercer; Trinity Church; the Isaiah Davenport House Museum; The Pirates' House Restaurant; City Market; Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace; Cathedral of St John the Baptist; Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home; Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters; First African Baptist Church; Andrew Low House Museum and so much more.

The area is an excellent example of 18th century urban planning with its grid plan layout which was designed by General James Oglethorpe when he founded it in 1733. This layout has since become an oft-copied model for other towns in America and abroad, known as “Oglethorpe Plan” or “Savannah Plan”. It was Oglethorpe's vision to create a series of large public squares throughout downtown that would act as community gathering places for residents to meet their neighbors, attend events or simply take walks through their neighborhoods. This idea has been successfully implemented everywhere from New York City to London and still remains pertinent today as people continue to flock towards cities where they can enjoy outdoor spaces with friends and family while also engaging with their local culture.

In addition to its impressive architecture and urban design, there are a variety of cultural activities available within the district year round - ranging from historic house tours offered daily by local tour companies to art exhibits at various galleries like Telfair Academy or Jepson Center For The Arts - providing visitors with plenty of things to do while they explore this wonderful part of America's past.

The Savannah Historic District is definitely one of those must-see sites if you ever find yourself visiting Georgia, offering endless opportunities for exploration into this city's rich history and gorgeous architecture – not to mention all other aspects related to it including entertainment venues, restaurants/bars, shopping spots etc… A visit here will definitely leave you feeling both educated about America's past – as well as mesmerized by its beauty!
