The Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters in Savannah, Georgia is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most well-known examples of regency architecture in the United States. Built in 1816, the house was designed by William Jay, an architect who also designed many other important buildings in Savannah such as the Telfair Academy . The house itself is two stories tall with a grand entrance hall, drawing room, three large parlors and a library. There are also several bedrooms and bathrooms on both levels.
One of the most significant features of the Owens-Thomas House is its slave quarters. Located behind the main house, the quarters were originally comprised of four cabins—each housing up to 8 people—and a kitchen building. Today visitors can explore these structures and get an intimate look into what life was like for slaves at this time period. The quarters have been restored to their original appearance and include interactive exhibitions that help visitors better understand the lives of those enslaved here.
The house itself is decorated with breathtaking furnishings from the early 19th century. It has beautiful antiques, chandeliers, paintings and sculptures throughout its interior walls conveying its former glamor during Savannah's Golden Age (1788–1837). This architectural masterpiece also has two terraced gardens that are surrounded by high walls making it a prime example of Southern Culture at its best.
Today Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters serves as part museum and part living history center where visitors can learn more about Savannah’s history while exploring its unique culture. In addition to tours of both the house and slave quarters, there are programs offered such as school field trips that focus on African American history, local folklore talks and even special events like weddings or receptions where guests can be immersed in this historic location for a truly unique experience!
