The Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, Georgia is an art museum and one of the leading cultural attractions in the city. It holds a wide variety of exhibitions and programs that explore the history, culture and art of the coastal region. The center opened its doors in 2006, more than a century after Telfair Academy of Arts & Sciences first launched its mission to collect and display artworks from around the world. Today, visitors can explore its expansive galleries which showcase paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures and videos from contemporary artists as well as renowned masters like Rembrandt and Monet.
Visitors to the Jepson Center can also enjoy a selection of educational resources including lectures, workshops, interactive activities and more. These events often feature experts on topics ranging from African-American art to coastal ecology to local history. Additionally, the museum offers a children’s gallery which encourages creativity through hands-on activities like painting, sculpting or drawing.
The permanent collection at Jepson Center consists of over 7,000 works of art spanning nearly every era of American culture. This includes examples of fine arts such as painting and sculpture as well as decorative arts like furniture and jewelry collections. In addition to featuring artwork by well-known figures like Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Warhol, the museum also showcases pieces by emerging modern artists from around the world.
The building itself is also quite impressive – it was designed by Moshe Safdie who melded modern architecture with traditional elements like brick walls reflecting Savannah’s colorful past. With so much to see both inside and outside this unique structure, it’s no surprise that Jepson Center has become an integral part of the city's cultural identity for locals and tourists alike.
