The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose is a remarkable and mysterious structure that has been captivating visitors for decades. Built by Sarah Winchester, the house was constructed from 1884 until her death in 1922. Throughout this time, Sarah added peculiar rooms, staircases to nowhere and secret passages – all of which give the house its unique mystery today. This 160-room Victorian mansion was one of the first attractions in California when it opened to the public in 1923, and continues to draw an audience due to its strange features and fascinating past.
The mansion was built according to Sarah’s own design plans and over the years she changed her ideas on what she wanted the house to look like; this resulted in an ever-changing construction of stairways leading up onto ceilings, doors opening onto walls and other oddities throughout the building. It is thought that Sarah believed she could keep evil spirits at bay by never pausing in her construction efforts; hence why there are so many unusual features within the house. There are also widespread myths about secret passageways that connect the Winchester Mystery House with nearby buildings or even other states such as Texas – however none of these tales have been proven true.
Today, visitors can explore much of the house and learn more about its unique history through tours offered by staff. The guided tours allow people to get an inside glimpse into some of Sarah’s most famous rooms such as her Seance Room where she supposedly held spiritual communications every Friday at midnight with departed souls, as well as many others parts of the house including impressive architectural details like stained glass windows, engraved wood furniture and intricate sculptures hidden throughout.
