Candlestick Park in San Francisco was the home of the San Francisco Giants from 1960 until 1999 and was also the home of the San Francisco 49ers from 1971 until 2013. The stadium was located at Candlestick Point on the shores of San Francisco Bay and was originally built as a multi-purpose stadium. It was also the first baseball stadium on the West Coast. The stadium was named after a nearby candlestick-shaped rock formation and was originally nicknamed "The Stick." The stadium had a capacity of just over 55,000 when it opened, but it was expanded to its current capacity of just over 70,000 in 1989. The first game ever played at Candlestick Park was a college football game between the University of California and Saint Mary's College on October 1, 1960. The first Major League Baseball game at Candlestick Park was played on April 12, 1971, between the Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The final baseball game at Candlestick Park was played on September 30, 1999, between the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The final football game at Candlestick Park was played on December 23, 2013, between the 49ers and the Atlanta Falcons. Candlestick Park was demolished in 2015 and is now the site of a new mixed-use development called Candlestick Point State Park.
