San Antonio Zoo is one of the oldest and most beloved attractions in San Antonio, Texas. Located on the outskirts of downtown San Antonio, this zoo was founded in 1914, making it over a century old. Visitors to the zoo can explore exhibits representing many different habitats from around the world and view more than 3,500 animals that call it home.
The San Antonio Zoo includes both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Exhibits range from African Savanna to Asian Forests, as well as deserts and walk-through aviaries. A carousel and Peacock Cafe provide entertainment for visitors of all ages. The zoo also hosts a number of special events throughout the year like themed days and animal shows.
One popular exhibit inside the zoo is World of Primates which features primates from all around the world in their natural habitats with plenty of activities available for kids and adults alike. Other attractions include Dinosaurs Alive!, an interactive dinosaur exhibit featuring life-sized animatronic dinosaurs; Reptile House with displays featuring crocodiles, turtles, lizards, snakes and more; Brackenridge Birds of Prey Show where visitors can see majestic birds up close; Sea Lion Show; Stars at Night; Koala Encounter; African Plains where zebras, giraffes, antelope and more roam free; Penguin Cove where guests can view penguins swimming under water; Australian Adventure featuring wallabies and other unique animals native to Australia; World of Dogs which showcases beautiful breeds from around the world; Lory Landing aviary filled with brightly colored birds flying freely in an open environment; as well as several playgrounds for kids and splash pads for cooling off during hot summer days.
In addition to its exhibits and activities, the San Antonio Zoo also has a number of conservation programs dedicated to preserving endangered species and their habitats. Each year they partner with conservation organizations around the world to help protect wild habitats by providing funds or resources necessary for research projects or by participating directly in fieldwork. Programs have included helping cheetahs in Namibia recover from disease outbreaks, protecting tigers in India through research into their population sizes and behaviors, assisting polar bears in Alaska by providing data on sea ice levels that are affecting their food sources, breeding albatrosses at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in Hawaii, studying gorillas near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda, among others.
San Antonio Zoo continues to be a mainstay attraction for locals who visit often as well as tourists looking for family friendly day trips or weekend excursions. With over 100 years of history behind it combined with its commitment to conservation programs it’s no wonder why this beloved zoo’s popularity continues to grow each year!
