The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is a world-class art museum located in beautiful downtown San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 1981, the museum features over 25,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years, from antiquity to contemporary art. It is one of the largest collections of Spanish Colonial and Latin American art in the United States. The collection includes European paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings, photography and African and Asian art. Its comprehensive American collection ranges from colonial silverware to contemporary painting and sculpture. In addition to its permanent collection galleries, SAMA also offers temporary exhibitions showcasing art from around the world.
SAMA is located in the historic former Lone Star Brewery building along the banks of the San Antonio Riverwalk. Designed by renowned architect Marion Koogler McNay in 1925, this unique building was originally used as an icehouse until 1984 when it was converted into a museum facility. The museum features two courtyards filled with statues and sculptures by artists such as Frederic Remington and Henry Moore, as well as outdoor gardens containing a variety of plants native to South Texas. Inside visitors can explore four levels dedicated to different time periods or themes within each gallery: Ancient Mediterranean (Greek & Roman), Modern & Contemporary Art (19th–21st century), Spanish Colonial & Mexican Folk Art (16th–20th century), and Native American Art (prehistoric–contemporary).
In addition to its galleries, SAMA also houses an auditorium which hosts lectures and educational programs for both children and adults; a library with more than 50,000 books on fine arts topics; a shop selling products related to current exhibitions; and a café offering light lunches with food inspired by works of art on view at the museum. With its diverse collections spanning 5 millennia across many cultures and countries—not to mention its uniquely engaging atmosphere—it's no wonder that the San Antonio Museum of Art has been a destination for locals and visitors alike since 1981!
