The Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio, Texas is a stunning display of natural beauty and peace. Located in Brackenridge Park , the garden covers 4.5 acres and features a large koi pond, multiple bridges, waterfalls and streams, as well as several stone pagodas. There are over 600 varieties of plants around the garden’s paths, including breathtaking cherry trees which bloom every spring. In addition to the beauty of the gardens itself, it is also home to a number of Japanese sculptures created by Japanese-American sculptor Zinzo Saroku Yamaguchi.
The history of this tranquil spot dates back to 1908 when it was originally called Chinese Sunken Gardens and designed by landscape architect Ray Lambert. It was designed with traditional Chinese elements such as rocks and ponds surrounded by exotic plants like azaleas and lotus flowers. In 1918, the San Antonio Parks Commission hired Japanese-born Isamu Taniguchi to redesign the garden once again into what has become known today as the Japanese Tea Garden. Since then, it has been host to many festivals such as Obon which celebrates ancestor worship traditions from Japan as well as hosting many weddings over time on its picturesque grounds.
Visitors can enjoy more than just a stroll through beautiful landscaping and vibrant blooms year-round—the garden also offers tea ceremonies during special occasions; martial arts demonstrations; live music performances; food stalls serving up traditional snacks such as yakitori, mochi ice cream and matcha tea lattes; plus much more! The Tea House is open daily for visitors wishing to take part in an authentic tea ceremony led by a master who will explain all aspects of this traditional practice. Here one can savor sweet treats while enjoying unmatched elegance that only a true Japanese tea ceremony can deliver.
