The Old Senator Tree in Saint Augustine is a magnificent sight to behold and holds a special place of honor among the city's residents. Located in the center of the Plaza de la Constitución, this massive oak tree has been standing since before the city was founded in 1565. The tree is believed to be around 500 years old, making it one of the oldest living things in St. Augustine.
Nicknamed "The Senator," it is said that this mighty oak has witnessed some of the most monumental events in American history, including a visit from President Theodore Roosevelt who famously declared that all living things have "the right to exist." For many generations, The Senator has served as an iconic symbol of hope and endurance, inspiring countless visitors with its sheer size and age.
Today, The Senator stands as a reminder of Saint Augustine's rich heritage and cultural diversity. Despite being constantly exposed to harsh weather conditions and various diseases over centuries, it still continues to thrive thanks to vigilant care from local organizations such as The St. Augustine Historical Society. To protect this incredible landmark, a protective fence was built around it in 2007 with metal grates and large stones set into concrete bases.
The Senator Tree is also an important part of local culture and folklore – there are many stories told by locals about its connection to Native Americans, Spanish explorers, early settlers and more. Every year on June 8th – which marks the date when Florida became part of the United States – citizens gather under The Old Senator Tree for a re-enactment ceremony that celebrates the historical event.
And although time and Mother Nature have taken their toll on The Senator's strength and stability over time, it remains an icon for all who live in or visit Saint Augustine – offering shade on hot summer afternoons, protection from storms during hurricane season, and serving as a reminder of our shared past. Thanks to dedicated preservation efforts from local residents who take great pride in protecting their beloved old tree, we can continue to enjoy its magnificence for many decades more yet!
