St. George Street was originally built in the 17th century by the Spanish colonists who founded St. Augustine. The street was named for St. George, the patron saint of Spain. It was originally a dirt road, but it was paved with coquina shells in 1821. In 1887, Henry Flagler had the street paved with brick.
