Fort Matanzas National Monument was established on October 15, 1924 to preserve the history of the Spanish fort located on Rattlesnake Island in the Matanzas Inlet, just south of St. Augustine, Florida. The fort was built by the Spanish in 1742 to protect the city from attack by sea and was named after the massacre of French troops at Fort Matanzas during the 1740s. The fort played an important role during the American Revolution and the War of 1812, when it was captured by American forces. Today, the fort is a popular tourist destination and is open to the public for tours.
