Lincoln Historic Site, Ruidoso, NM
The Lincoln Historic Site in Ruidoso, New Mexico provides an educational and immersive experience into the life of Abraham Lincoln, arguably one of the most iconic figures in United States history. Located in a rural area near the town of Hondo, the historic site has been preserved since 1879, when it was first founded.
The grounds of the historic site are made up of numerous buildings dedicated to preserving Lincoln's memory. First and foremost is the log cabin that was home to the 16th President during his young adulthood. This humble abode, built by Thomas Lincoln in 1835, contains original artifacts that help bring Lincoln's life back to life. Of particular note is a rifle given to Lincoln by his father as well as a cobbler's bench used for making shoes on which he worked. The remaining structures onsite include a school house where he taught and a small general store that served as a gathering place for local residents who would discuss current events with each other.
The museum located at the site houses many more artifacts from this era, including furniture from his family’s home, photographs of him during his presidency and even remnants of some significant battles like Shiloh and Gettysburg. The museum also contains exhibits about Reconstruction and post-Civil War America which explore how people were affected by these formative moments in our nation’s history. Other attractions at the site include trails that run along nearby riverside areas and hiking opportunity through challenging terrain surrounding the area.
In addition to its educational value, visitors can enjoy historical re-enactments hosted by experienced historians that allow guests to learn more about what it was like living during this era through authentic period costumes and conversations between characters portraying key figures from US history such as Ulysses S Grant or Jefferson Davis.
