The Rail Park Philadelphia is an urban park that was developed from the abandoned Reading Railroad and opened in June of 2018. It spans three city neighborhoods in Philadelphia and has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors alike.
The Rail Park takes up much of the traditional Reading Railroad infrastructure, including the four-acre viaduct that runs through the Callowhill section of Philadelphia. It features two levels of removal railroad tracks, one half below street level and another half above street level. The park also contains green space, seating areas, bike lanes, open lawns, interactive sculptures, public art installations, connection to existing trails and walkways, interpretive signage about local history and ecology as well as restored railway cars.
In addition to being a leisurely walking area to explore with friends or family, The Rail Park also provides educational opportunities for people of all ages; its interpretive signs provide information related to local history as well as flora and fauna from the region. The Rail Park provides easy access to the Schuylkill River Trail which offers a unique view of downtown Philadelphia. There are also plenty of places for visitors to rest their feet on benches scattered throughout the park or take in stunning views from elevated points on the walkway—especially at night when Philly's lights come alive beneath you.
The Rail Park may be most famous for its iconic LOVE sculpture created by artist Robert Indiana located at Broad Street Station Plaza along with other interactive sculptures along the path including “Fayette” by Bexx Powers-Cassidy which plays different sounds depending on where you stand near it - adding an interesting dynamic to your experience while strolling through this revitalized part of Philly's history.
For those looking for more than just a leisurely stroll through The Rail Park can join any number of guided tours such as Hidden City Tours which will take you around some of Philly's offbeaten paths and lesser known sites along with full commentary about each location's cultural significance so you can immerse yourself fully into understanding why Philadelphia has become such a culturally important city over time.
