Rittenhouse Square is located in the heart of Philadelphia's Center City District. The square is bounded by Walnut Street to the north, Locust Street to the south, Rittenhouse Street to the east, and Broad Street to the west. The square is named for its original owner, David Rittenhouse, a wealthy scientist and clockmaker who lived in the area in the late eighteenth century.
Rittenhouse Square has been a popular gathering place for Philadelphians since it was first laid out in 1682. The square was originally used as a pasture for cattle and other livestock. In 1825, the city of Philadelphia purchased the land from Rittenhouse's heirs and began to develop it as a public park. Today, Rittenhouse Square is one of the most beautiful and well-maintained parks in the city.
The centerpiece of Rittenhouse Square is a fountain designed by noted American architect Stanford White. The fountain, which was completed in 1904, features an elegant statue of Walter Reed, a doctor who helped to develop a vaccine for yellow fever.
