Race Street Pier is a public park and recreational area located in the Old City district of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It offers spectacular views of the Delaware River and is the perfect spot to relax and take in the sights and sounds of the city. The pier is 1,800 feet in length, which allows for plenty of seating areas, walking paths, and open spaces.
The pier was originally built in 1918 to serve as a commercial port for cargo ships. However, after years of neglect it had fallen into disrepair before being purchased by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation in 2007 with plans to transform it into a vibrant public space. After several years of planning and renovations, Race Street Pier officially opened to the public in 2011.
One of Race Street Pier's most impressive features is its expansive green space – expansive enough that it can accommodate up to 500 people at once – making it a popular destination for photographers, art enthusiasts, joggers and picnickers alike. Visitors can also enjoy sweeping views of both sides of the river from atop an observation deck located at one end of the pier. There are benches throughout which allow visitors to sit back and simply enjoy their surroundings while taking in the beauty that Philadelphia has to offer.
In addition to breathtaking views and lush landscapes Race Street Pier also provides access to various amenities such as bike racks, public restrooms, kayak rentals, food truck vendors (seasonal)and two dog parks that feature splash zones for dogs during warm months.
