Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is a stunning mosaic art installation located in Philadelphia. Founded and created by Isaiah Zagar, the garden consists of an outdoor sculpture garden, indoor galleries and a community education space, designed to be a visionary environment and serve as a reminder of the importance of art within our lives.
The main focal point of the garden is the half-block lot located on South Street which was transformed by over 50,000 found objects including glass bottles, bicycle wheels, ceramic fragments and hand-made tiles with glittering fragments of mirror embedded throughout. Furthermore, Zagar pioneered his own style of mosaic known as 'South Philly Mosaic' that features bright colors along with textual elements such as poems and phrases that reflect his personal journey. This unique style has become iconic across Philadelphia and can be seen throughout the cityscape.
In addition to the outdoor exhibit, there are also five indoor galleries located in the building adjacent to the lot that displays Zagar's artwork from over four decades. These collections include works on paper, mixed media pieces as well as sculptural installations such as The Poem Tower which stands 10 feet tall and is considered to be one of Zagar’s most significant works.
Aside from being a visually captivating piece of artwork created for public display, Philadelphia's Magic Garden also serves several educational purposes for the community. Through their 'Garden Resource Project', PMG runs workshops throughout year teaching visitors how to create their own mosaics using everyday materials such as tiles, mirrors and bottles along with cultural activities like poetry readings and movie screenings. In addition to its educational programs, PMG also hosts several youth leadership initiatives as well as family friendly events like its annual “Family Day” where visitors can purchase tickets for discounts at local galleries or take part in interactive tours hosted by PMG’s knowledgeable staff members.
Philadelphia's Magic Gardens represents more than just an impressive collection of mosaic artwork; it celebrates the beauty of art itself through its vibrant illustrations coupled with Isaiah Zagar’s powerful visual language that speaks directly to viewers hearts while simultaneously inspiring them to pursue their creative passions. It truly is an enchanting experience like no other!
