The Philadelphia Museum Of Art Steps are an iconic landmark in the City of Brotherly Love, located in Fairmount Park. Constructed in the early 1900s, the renowned stairs have become one of the most recognizable sights in Philadelphia.
The steps were originally designed to provide access to the museum and easy entry for visitors. The entrance of the steps consists of a large courtyard area with two symmetrical crescent-shaped staircases that descend down to the sidewalk area below. Each staircase is comprised of 72 steps leading up to a terrace overlooking the Schuylkill River. At night, the terrace is illuminated with beautiful white lights and provides an amazing view of downtown Philadelphia.
In addition to providing access to museum visitors, visitors can also enjoy wonderful views from atop these steps, including views of City Hall, Boathouse Row, and other monuments throughout Philadelphia’s skyline. In fact, these steps were so beloved by Philadelphians that a copy was built at Rocky Balboa's training grounds in South Philadelphia for Sylvester Stallone's 2006 film Rocky Balboa! It has also been featured in numerous movies like National Treasure (2004) and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (2009).
The Philadelphia Museum of Art Steps have been featured on numerous postcards as well as becoming a popular location for wedding photos and engagement announcements. In 2012, Time magazine even listed it among its list of "America's Great Public Spaces". The bottom line is that if you find yourself in Philly, take a stroll up or down these grandiose stairs - you won't regret it! They truly symbolize the beauty and spirit of this great city.
