Library Hall in Philadelphia is the first purpose-built library in the United States. It was designed by architect Benjamin Latrobe and completed in 1824. The library was a gift to the people of Philadelphia from benefactor Dr. Thomas W. Bond.
The three-story building is constructed of brick with a limestone façade. It features a portico with six Corinthian columns that leads to a grand staircase and main entrance. The interior features a double-height reading room with a skylight, marble fireplace, and brass chandeliers.
The Library Company of Philadelphia, which was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731, was the original occupant of Library Hall. The collection of books and manuscripts belonging to the Library Company were moved to Library Hall when it opened. Today, the Library Company occupies a new building across the street from Independence Hall.
Visitors to Philadelphia can tour Library Hall and see firsthand how early Americans valued learning and knowledge.
