McPolin Barn in Park City is a historic landmark and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city’s rich past. The barn was built in 1898 by Martin Polin, an immigrant from Austria, who worked hard to build a successful dairy farm in western Summit County. The site has been described as “a reminder of the hardworking pioneers who chose to make their home here”, and serves as a window into the rural lifestyle that many generations experienced in this region.
The barn is a hand-hewn log structure with an expansive center aisle stretching 80 feet long. It contains two levels for hay storage and two horse stalls on the lower level. Originally constructed using Norwegian spruce logs and white fir floorboards, the barn was used to house cows, sheep, horses and equipment related to farming operations on Polin’s farm. In its heyday, McPolin Barn accommodated over 30 cows at once.
Today, McPolin Barn stands out as an iconic symbol of Park City’s heritage with its rustic western charm and original architecture attracting visitors from far and wide. Guided tours are available throughout summer months where visitors can learn more about local agrarian history while seeing the restored building up close. It is also home to various events such as concerts or photo shoots throughout the year.
In 2003, McPolin Barn was added to both the Utah State Register of Historic Sites and National Register of Historic Places acknowledging its importance as part of local culture and history. In 2011 a major restoration effort was undertaken by volunteers from Park City Municipal Corporation restoring it back to its former glory including significant repairs within the structure like replacing all wood shingles with metal corrugated siding for preservation purposes. Since then, McPolin Barn remains open for public visits during summer season and serves as a reminder of Park City's unique agricultural roots that shaped our community today
