The base was named after World War I pilot Lt Frank Tyndall, who was killed in a training accident in 1918. The base was originally established as a training base for Army Air Corps pilots in 1941. In 1947, it became a permanent Air Force base.
The base played a key role in the Space Race, as it was home to one of the launch sites for NASA's Mercury and Gemini space programs. It also served as a launch site for military missiles during the Cold War.
