Long Creek Nature Preserve in Palm Coast, Florida is a beautiful and tranquil outdoor spot for all ages to enjoy. The preserve is located on the Matanzas River and includes a mix of saltwater marsh, hardwood hammocks, pine flatwoods, and sandhills. It provides a home to an array of wildlife including gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, wood storks, bald eagles, otters and ospreys.
The preserve offers several activities for visitors to take part in such as hiking and nature trails, kayaking or canoeing on the Matanzas River, picnicking, bird watching (over 150 species have been recorded here!) as well as educational programs for kids. There are multiple designated trails where people can observe the natural beauty of the preserve up close. The longest trail here is 4 miles long and takes about 3 hours to traverse it completely.
One of the main attractions here at Long Creek Nature Preserve is its spectacular view from atop one of its highest points - Turtle Mound. This 40 foot tall sand dune holds historical importance as Native Americans used it for ceremonial purposes in the past. From Turtle Mound visitors can get an unobstructed view of the entire preserve as well as across the Matanzas River towards St Augustine inlet.
