The Centennial Land Run Monument in Oklahoma City is a striking monument celebrating the 1889 land run and the spirit of Oklahomans. Located in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, it stands as a symbol of the state's pioneering past and its ongoing commitment to progress.
Designed by artist Paul Moore Jr., the monument consists of three large sculptures which stand atop four pedestals, each representing one of the five Native American tribes that resided in Oklahoma prior to statehood. The central figure is an heroic-sized statue of a pioneer man who strides forward with determination and courage, while two additional figures flank him—a cowboy on horseback, and a settler woman holding a Bible. Together they depict the struggles and triumphs endured by settlers in their quest for a new home.
The base of the sculpture features four bronze panels featuring detailed scenes from daily life during this time period. There are also inscriptions sculpted around the base reflecting on Oklahoma's history, its people, and their dreams for the future. In addition to this artwork, there are five granite walls beneath the sculpture inscribed with quotes from some of Oklahoma’s biggest historical figures—all meant to showcase what makes this state so unique and special.
The Centennial Land Run Monument was dedicated in 1989 on April 22nd to commemorate Oklahoma’s centennial celebration. Since then it has served as an integral part of downtown OKC as well as being one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Oklahoma City. The monument stands strong as an example of Oklahoman pride and perseverance, reminding everyone who visits that no matter how difficult things may get, we can all look back on our history with gratitude and hope for continued progress in our beloved state.
