Fort Nashboro in Nashville is an iconic site steeped in history. It was the site of a Revolutionary War battle fought between the Americans and British forces in 1781, during which the Americans won a decisive victory. The fort has since been preserved as a historic landmark and tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to learn more about its storied past.
The original fort was comprised of log palisades constructed around an earthen bastion and occupied by American troops commanded by General William Davidson. When British forces led by Captain Patrick Ferguson attacked on April 7th, 1781, they were met with staunch resistance from the American soldiers and ultimately driven back. The British casualties totaled more than 400 men, while only 40 American troops were killed or wounded. This decisive victory helped to ensure America's independence from Britain, making Fort Nashboro an important symbol of this defining moment in our nation's history.
Today visitors to the fort can experience life as it was during colonial times through various educational programs and tours offered by the park service. Artifacts such as muskets, uniforms, maps and flags that date back to the Revolutionary War are displayed throughout the park grounds, providing insight into what life must have been like during this critical event in American history. Additionally, there are several markers honoring those who served at Fort Nashboro as well as monuments commemorating those who lost their lives defending their country against British forces at this important battle site.
Visitors also have access to recreational activities such as hiking trails that wind through picturesque woodlands surrounding Fort Nashboro or fishing in one of three nearby creeks for largemouth bass and other game fish. Picnic areas provide the perfect spot for families to enjoy lunch after exploring all that Fort Nashboro has to offer—a small reminder that although much has changed since 1781, our commitment to freedom remains strong today.
