Centennial Park in Nashville, Tennessee, is a beautiful and historic park with a wealth of attractions. It was founded in 1896 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Tennessee's admission to the Union on June 1, 1796. The land upon which the park sits was formerly part of Fort Negley, a Union garrison during the Civil War.
Covering 132 acres of lush green lawns, wooded hillsides, walking trails and gardens, Centennial Park provides plenty for visitors to explore. The signature feature is the iconic Parthenon replica – built in 1897 as a temporary exhibit – which today houses a 42-foot-tall statue of Athena Parthenos and an impressive collection of artwork from Nashville’s Frist Center for Visual Arts. Visitors can take a stroll around Lake Watauga or check out the Centennial Sportsplex, where they can play tennis or go swimming.
The park also hosts several popular events throughout the year such as live music concerts and other festivals as well as seasonal activities such as ice skating and Easter egg hunts. It’s also home to monuments dedicated to various war veterans, including World War II veterans. Picnic shelters are available for rent year round so that visitors can enjoy some quiet time outdoors with family or friends.
A walk through Centennial Park offers something for everyone – from its vibrant history to its many recreational opportunities. With its stunning setting and wide range of activities on offer, it truly is one of Nashville’s must-see destinations – whether you’re visiting for the first time or coming back again!
