Fannin County Veterans Memorial Park in Blue Ridge, Georgia is an amazing facility dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served our country. Located at the intersection of Highway 515 and Hwy 5, this park was built in 2005 to honor the veterans of Fannin County. The park contains a variety of monuments that tell the stories of these local heroes.
The most prominent monument is the granite Eternal Flame which stands in the center of the park and is lit every Memorial Day. Around it are several other monuments paying respect to those who fought in wars such as World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. There are also monuments honoring prisoners of war and ones that recognize fallen soldiers from Fannin County.
Atop one side of the eternal flame is a Civil War cannon believed to have been used by Confederate forces during their retreat from Chattanooga in 1863. Atop another side stands a cannon which is stated to have been used by Union troops near Resaca during Sherman’s march toward Atlanta in 1864. These cannons are just two examples among many that serve as reminders that members of both sides fought bravely during times of war and conflict.
The park also contains several memorial benches which display plaques with inscriptions honoring individuals or groups who gave their lives for our freedom. Additionally, there are trees planted along with engraved bricks surrounding each tree that commemorate specific veterans.
This memorial serves to remind us all of the sacrifices made by so many throughout history who put their own lives on hold so they could fight for what they believed was right for their countrymen. It serves as a place where family can come together and remember those who served our nation so selflessly. As you visit Fannin County Veterans Memorial Park in Blue Ridge be sure to take some time out to appreciate all these heroic individuals did for us – we owe them an immense debt of gratitude for ensuring our freedom today.
