Landscape Arch is one of the most impressive natural attractions located in Moab, Utah. It is a sandstone arch with a remarkable span of 290 feet and towering height of 306 feet - making it one of the longest natural arches in North America. Its awe-inspiring presence is made even more spectacular by its unique shape, which has been described as resembling a giant's bow. The arch itself was created over time by water erosion, rain runoff and weathering from wind and sandblasting. The entrance to Landscape Arch is easily accessed via an easy one-mile trail that passes through red rock formations and some juniper woodlands. As visitors make their way along this path, they are rewarded with stunning views of the arch from multiple angles that showcase its grandeur.
In addition to being an impressive landmark, Landscape Arch also has quite a bit of history associated with it. It was first discovered by pioneering surveyors in 1909 during an official exploration mission in the area where they were mapping out boundaries for Arches National Park. The original name bestowed on the arch was "Delicate Arch," however, it was later changed to "Landscape Arch" due to the fact that this particular formation offered stunning views when viewed from afar – almost like looking at a painting or photograph depicting a sweeping landscape scene.
Furthermore, Landscape Arch is still an active geological feature since it continues to erode away with time due to increased temperatures and subsequent expansion from heat contraction during colder months. This causes significant rock falls from time to time which can be observed throughout the year – adding an extra degree of dynamism and life to this already incredible geological formation.
Additionally, many species call Landscape Arch home including raptors such as prairie falcons, golden eagles, peregrine falcons as well as birds like Gambel’s quail and Say’s phoebes who roost on or near it during certain times of year. Visitors who want to witness these majestic creatures should try and come between April through September when there are greater chances of witnessing wildlife activity at the landmark site. All in all, Landscape Arch remains one of Moab's most iconic landmarks – offering captivating scenes that will stay imprinted in visitors' minds forever!
