Corona Arch is an iconic stone arch located in the heart of Moab , Utah. The arch is part of the surrounding area’s red rock canyons and sandstone cliffs, creating a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities like hiking and camping. The arch itself is made up of two natural walls of sandstone that have slowly eroded away over time to form a large, curved archway that spans about 150 feet across and 75 feet high.
The formation of Corona Arch dates back millions of years ago when the area was still underwater and covered with sediments from ancient rivers. Over time, these sediments turned into sandstones with different textures, colors, and shapes which eventually led to the formation we see today. These layers are still visible in the walls of the arch, with some layers being hard sandstone while others are softer and more brittle.
One unique feature of Corona Arch is its ease of access—it can be hiked to without any climbing or technical gear. The hike starts at a parking lot near Highway 191 where it winds around rocks and cacti before ending at the base of the arch. From here, hikers can take in views from below or even walk up a nearby hill to get up close with Corona's opening. In addition to hiking, many visitors also take advantage of this area by mountain biking or taking pictures as they enjoy their stay in Moab’s beautiful scenery.
Aside from its stunning beauty, Corona Arch has become popular among BASE jumpers due to its sheer size and height and because it has one of the longest free-fall distances for this type of extreme sport in North America (about 180 feet). Though taking on this activity requires special permits from both local law enforcement and land management agencies, it’s an adrenaline rush like no other for those who wish to experience it in person!
For those looking for something less dangerous but equally thrilling, Corona Arch also makes for a great spot for rappelling activities—particularly during the warmer months when temperatures are ideal for such activities. This great adventure allows visitors to descend from either side or even through the middle (if brave enough!) while taking in all that nature has to offer at every turn!
No matter how you choose to explore this incredible natural formation, there’s no denying that Corona Arch is an impressive sight—and one worth adding to your Moab bucket list!
