Housed in the old original passenger terminal building of the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, this museum offers visitors a chance to explore local history and culture as well as some of the best fishing opportunities in the area. This museum provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the history and traditions around fishing that have been passed down from generation to generation in Northwest Florida.
The museum houses a wealth of artifacts from years of fishing the Gulf Coast with relics ranging from old fishing boats and lures to photographs and oral histories. Visitors can also explore interactive exhibits that explain how fisheries resources were used by Native Americans both prior to and during European settlement of the region. The museum also provides educational programs about local wildlife conservation efforts as well as activities for schools and families on ecology topics such as coastal ecosystems, endangered species, waterfowl nesting habitats, marine debris, red tides, and beach erosion.
In addition to its permanent collections, the museum also hosts numerous temporary exhibits throughout each year that focus on various aspects of life along the Gulf Coast such as folklore and superstition related to hurricanes or events like sailing regattas. Special events are held every month including lectures by local experts on topics such as seafood harvesting techniques or environmental issues affecting fishermen’s livelihoods. On occasion there may even be live music performances or art openings featuring works by local artists who have a strong connection with the sea or seafaring culture.
The museum is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm with admission fees varying depending on age group. Group tours can be arranged upon request at least one week in advance.
