The Torch of Friendship is a monument in Miami, Florida that commemorates the relationship between the United States and Cuba. It was erected in 1973 as a symbol of hope for everlasting friendship between the two countries. The statue stands at 135 feet tall and consists of bronze and steel pieces that form a flame-like shape. It is located on Biscayne Boulevard and overlooks the Bay of Biscayne, providing an inspiring view for those who visit it.
The Torch of Friendship has an interesting history behind it. The idea for building the monument was created by Cuban exiles who had recently migrated to Miami after Fidel Castro took control of Cuba in 1959. The exile community sought to create a strong bond with their home country by creating a physical reminder of friendship between them. Thus, they started fundraising initiatives to bring their vision to life, raising more than $1 million in just two years.
In 1972, construction began on the Torch of Friendship and it was completed in 1973 by Cuban sculptor José Villa Soberon. The original design featured four steel-clad columns with a central pier from which the flame shape rose up into an arching skyward arc. This iconic design quickly became an integral part of Miami’s skyline and became one of its most recognizable landmarks. In 2019, further renovations were made to ensure that the monument stands for many years to come.
The Torch of Friendship also serves as an important symbol for peace and unity throughout Latin America as well as between Cuba and the United States. Every year during Memorial Day weekend it is lit up with colored lights from dusk until dawn to honor veterans from both countries who sacrificed their lives while they served in their respective armies during World War II or other global conflicts over the past century.
The Torch is also celebrated annually with special festivities such as concerts and firework displays held near its base, accompanied by speeches from local dignitaries about how this unique gesture acts as an enduring reminder of peace across oceans and political boundaries alike – something truly worth commemorating each year!
