Maurice A. Ferré Park is a large urban park located in Miami, Florida. This 27-acre park sits at the heart of the city and offers citizens and visitors alike the chance to enjoy a refreshing green space within the bustling downtown area. The park features a number of amenities, including landscaped walking paths, playgrounds, water features, exercise equipment, benches and picnic tables.
In addition to its recreational assets, Maurice A. Ferré Park also serves as an important cultural hub for residents of Miami and its surrounding communities. The park plays host to numerous festivals throughout the year, such as Carnaval Miami, which celebrates Latin American culture through live music and entertainment; Miami Spice Festival which celebrates Caribbean food and culture; and Taste of Little Havana which showcases Cuban foods, artisans and musicians.
The park is named after the late Mayor of Miami Maurice A. Ferré (1926-2010). During his two terms between 1973-1985 Mayor Ferré was responsible for transforming Miami from a small city into one of the most vibrant metropolises in America. In homage to his memory, sculptures honoring his life’s work were placed within the grounds of the park in 2010 by members of the local community.
Within Maurice A. Ferré Park stands one of its key attractions – “The Freedom Tower”. This historic building was originally built as a newspaper headquarters in 1925 but gained new relevance during Fidel Castro’s rule in Cuba when it became known as "El Refugio" ("the refuge"). Here Cuban exiles could find necessary paperwork used to gain access to US citizenship during their time spent in Florida. As such this building has become iconic with many other Latin American countries who have experienced exile during difficult times.
Maurice A. Ferré Park is not only an important recreational asset for locals but also serves as an important symbol for all Latin Americans immigrants who now call South Florida home today - helping them feel connected with their heritage and identity within their adopted homeland.
